Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council has been given approval to expand the Council Chamber in the city to accommodate extra Councillors after next May’s local election.

The County Council had to apply to the City Council to make the changes at the building at Prospect Hill.

The City Council has approved the plans to extend the County Council Chamber with 5 conditions attached.

The remaining internal courtyard area at County buildings must be landscaped and the external finishes of the proposed extension must match the existing Council Chamber.

There are currently 30 members of Galway County Council, but this will increase to 39 after May’s local election.

The additional county councillors are as a result of Town councils being abolished.

Controversy has erupted in the past over the expansion of the Council Chamber with some Councillors stating funding for the work should come from the State, rather than the Council as it’s a directive of the Government to increase the Local Authority.
