Galway bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council has passed its budget for 2014.

At a special meeting at County Hall last evening members were advised of a shortfall of over 200 thousand euro in anticipated funding from local government.

The approved budget contains an expenditure of 122 million euro over the next 12 months – that’s a reduction of 4 percent on the budget adopted for 2013.

There’s to be no increase in commercial rates due to what County Manager Martina Maloney described as ‘the difficulties being experienced by businesses at this time’.

30 thousand euro has been allocated to advance a suitable site or an existing building to accommodate a retained fire station for South Connemara.

10 thousand euro is also to be given to Galway Mountain Rescue towards a base for the voluntary group.

These two proposals were among the adjustments tabled and passed by the technical group chaired by Cllr Jimmy McClearn who had been in discussion all day yesterday.
