COUNTY CLLRS SAY ROAD WORKERS MUST BE KEPT ON

Galway county councillors are discussing the threat to temporary positions as a result of cutbacks in council finances.

Up to 220 public sector workers in Galway face losing their jobs as the city and county council cut short-term posts to cope with the recession.

A spokesperson for the city council has confirmed 15 short-term contracts due to end this year won’t be renewed.

Galway county council is ‘reviewing’ 205 contract positions this year, many connected with roads projects.

At this evening’s county council meeting several councillors stressed the importance of road maintenence.

They said it’s vital for the county to have good infrastructure now more than ever.
