County Cllr hits out at costs of chamber upgrade at County Hall

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A county councillor says the local authority shouldn’t have to carry the cost of upgrading county hall to accomodate nine extra members next year.

200 thousand euro has been set aside in the 2014 budget to reconfigure the council chamber at Prospect Hill in the city.

Oranmore Area Cllr Jim Cuddy says the money would be better spent on disability grants or essential repair grants for the elderly.

Members passed the budget for 2014 at a special meeting earlier this month where they were advised of a shortfall of 202 thousand euro in anticipated funding from local government.

Cllr Cuddy says the chamber requires expansion as a result of the Environment Minister’s reforms and as such costs should not have to be carried by the local authority.
