Cork based singer/songwriter Nicole Maguire plays Monroe’s Live next Thursday, November 20.

After opening for American country singer Nanci Griffith on her 2010 Irish tour, Nicole caught the ear of producer Mitchell Froom, who invited her to Santa Monica to record her debut album.

The studio band for What You Really Mean comprised Pete Thomas, drummer with Elvis Costello and The Attractions;  Bob Glaub, bass player with Crosby Stills and Nash; and Val McCallum, guitarist for Sheryl Crow and Lucinda Williams. The album was engineered by Grammy winner David Boucher.

Nicola wanted to create an album she could stand over in 20 years time, and is happy she has done that.

It has won praise from The Daily Telegraph’s online culture editor, Martin Chilton, who commented on her “pure and elegant voice” as well as “the colour and depth” added by the backing musicians.

In her career so far the folk/country singer has shared the stage with Vince Gill, Glen Hansard, Kenny Rogers, Donovan, Lucinda Williams and Paul Brady, among others. In September 2013, she toured the US in the company of Damien Dempsey. In April this year, she and her band performed live on The Late Late Show.

Their Monroe’s show next week is part of a string of dates nationwide to support the release of Nicole’s latest single With You.

Doors are at 8.30pm and admission is €5 from monroes.ie or €8 on the door.
