Galway bay fm newsroom – The purchase of the Carnmore airport site presents an opportunity to further the economic development of Galway.

That’s according to the city and county council in a joint statement to Galway bay fm news this afternoon.

It was revealed today that the local authorities bought the 115 acre facility from Galway Chamber in a joint venture at a cost of 1.1 million euro.

The statement says the purchase ‘comes in advance of of significant new responsibilities in relation to economic development’ at the airport site, and adds that any future use will be agreed by both councils before proceeding.

The site has been used solely for private aviation since 2011 after the withdrawal of State funding for services led to a gradual withdrawal of commercial services

The five remaining staff are also to be laid off from this Friday, and the aviation licence is being handed back next week.
