Galway city council has voted in favour of the controversial plans to upgrade the Mervue playing pitches.

Councillors this evening voted 14 to one in favour of the plans.

The plans for St. James club involve the realignment of a senior playing pitch and the provision of an astro turf training area.

The plans have divided residents and a large number of submissions have been received.

These include concerns over traffic management and inadequate car parking.

St. James Club represents the areas of Mervue, Ballybane and Renmore.

Labour Councillor Collette Connolly voted against the proposals.
