A proposal to provide a taxi rank in Renmore by cutting into a green area on Renmore Avenue has been voted down by councillors.

However they gave the green light to 17 taxi spaces at Bridge Street and 14 spaces at Fairgreen Road near Ceannt Station.

Cllr Michael Crowe proposed the taxi stands plan with the exclusion of the Renmore Avenue proposal, saying cutting into the green space would be like taking a bite out an apple and continuing to bite.

Cllr Colette Connolly suggested that the Bons Secours Hospital provide a rank, stating it shouldn’t always has to be public land that’s used when there’s a private alternative.

Several councillors expressed concern about the lack of connectivity at Ceannt Station and called for a covered walkway like at Dublin Airport.

Director of Services Ciaran Hayes pointed out the difficulties with this in that the city council doesn’t own all the land in question.

Fellow official, Joe Tansey said next year there will be a new entrance and exit atrium near Fishgate, Ceannt Station like Heuston station and it will link all the way to the new taxi rank.

Cllrs raised issues connected with several other taxi ranks in the city and officials agreed to review these and put them up for discussion at a later stage
