COUNCILLORS URGED TO DO RIGHT THING OVER MAYORAL POSITION
Date Published: 10-May-2011
The next possible Mayor of Galway, Councillor Hildegarde Naughton says she is confident her party colleagues "will do the right thing" and nominate her for the position.
Fine Gael party controversy has erupted with the revelation that Councillor Padraig Conneely, who served as Mayor in 2008 /2009 wants to become Mayor again.
It had been agreed under the ‘Mayoral Pact’ in 2009, that Councillor Naughton would become the next Mayor when Michael Crowe’s term ends later this year.
However it’s understood, Councillor Conneely has now reneged on that pact and has entered a separate pact with Council newcomer and party colleague Frank Fahy.
Fahy was co-opted to the Council last March to replace Brian Walsh who was elected to the Dáil.
Speaking on the Keith Finnegan Show today, Councillor Naughton says nothing has been set in stone and she believes her colleagues will act correctly.
