Galway City Council is calling on the Minister for Fisheries, Simon Coveney, to hold an oral hearing, on a proposed fish farm for Galway bay.

At a meeting of the City Council last night, a motion, proposed by Councillor Colette Connolly, was unanimously passed requesting information about the authors of the Evironmental Impact Statement and the cost of it.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara has submitted an application for the fish farm off Inis Oírr, claiming it could generate millions in exports.

Councillor Connolly wants an oral hearing to be held so that the public can make their views on the fish farm known.

A similiar motion by Councillor Terry O’ Flaherty was incorporated into Councillor Connolly’s motion.

They want the Minister to note the reservations of the Council in relation to the endangerment of wild salmon stocks.

Speaking to Galway Bay Fm News, Councillor Connolly says there are serious issues to address.
