Council urged to buy land to ease Tuam traffic delays
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council has been urged to buy land at Weir Road to ease traffic jams on the N17 going through Tuam.
The call was made at this week’s meeting of Tuam Town Council.
Cllr Larry Bane said this was the main Galway to Donegal and Derry road and it was “clogged” up with lines of traffic sometimes as far back as the Ard Ri Hotel on the Milltown Road during the festive season.
He said the problem was being compounded by lorries not being able to turn easily into the Weir Road and he suggested that the Co Council buy some land at this corner and widen the road there.
Cllr Tom Reilly said that as he also thought that a property on the Weir Road corner was still for sale its purchase for road widening should be considered by the County Council.
Cllr Eamonn Kitt said the Weir Road corner was dangerous and there was also a need for installing a more modern system of traffic lights there.
