Galway City Council has turned down proposals to add nearly 20 new bedrooms to the iconic Hotel Meyrick on Eyre Square, ruling it would be “entirely unsympathetic” to the building.

The hotel’s owners, the property fund Alanis Capital, had sought permission for changes to the Protected Structure which included:

■ Change of use of the fifth floor from existing leisure centre and former swimming pool to 13 bedrooms;

■ Construction of a sixth floor containing six bedrooms;

■ Reconfiguring the ground floor bathrooms and the creation of a fire escape corridor;

■ Changes to the windows and conversion of a window into a fire escape door on the ground floor;

■ Alterations to the fourth floor including a new fire escape corridor.

The Council refused permission for the 19 new bedrooms – which would be located on the ‘modern’ 1960s wing to the side of the hotel – but approved the remainder of the application.

“The proposed development would result in the repurposing and extension of the life of a modern extension, which is entirely unsympathetic to the original building (a Protected Structure) in terms of architectural style, form, proportion and materials and bears no relationship with same.
