Galway City Council is to explore the possibility of building a new bridge across the River Corrib at Spanish Arch in the city.

At last night’s meeting of the Council, members gave the go ahead for a feasibility study to be carried out on a new traffic bridge South of the Wolfe Tone Bridge.

City Officials told the Council, that considering the cost of maintenance work each year on the Wolfe Tone Bridge and the disruption this work causes, alternatives should be sought.

This proposal would include pedetrianising the Wolfe Tone Bridge and building a new bridge for traffic further down towards Spanish Arch.

Director of Services Ciarán Hayes says they’re examining this option as it would provide greater connection between the East and West of the city.
