Council to crack down on rickshaw menace

GALWAY City Council is to draw up bye-laws controlling the use of rickshaws on streets throughout the city centre, which have been branded “a serious accident waiting to happen”.

At the moment, it’s estimated there are in the region of 20 rickshaws – three-seater carriages on wheels being pulled by people either on foot or by pedal – in operation in the city.

And there have been a series of complaints by members of the public that the ‘drivers’ are a danger to people in the pedestrianised zone and to other road users.

Now, the Council have vowed to crack down on the rickshaw operators by introducing strict new regulations on when and where they can be used.
