Galway County Council will make tentative approaches to see if it can acquire two of Ballinasloe’s landmark buildings – with a view to transforming for business and commercial use.

The old St Brigid’s Psychiatric Hospital’s closed its doors in 2013 while the legendary Hayden’s Hotel on Dunlo Street ceased trading two years later; both buildings have been vacant ever since.

However, Galway County Council will now contact both the HSE – with regard to St Brigid’s – and the current owners of Hayden’s to determine their respective future intentions.

Director of Services Liam Hanrahan told a meeting of the Ballinasloe Local Area Plan that he would report back on any progress to a future meeting of Ballinasloe Municipal Council.

Cllr Timmy Broderick (Ind) told that these buildings were falling into a state of dilapidation, and it was imperative that they be brought back into use before they become “total eyesores.”

“We are a long way off developing these sites when they are not even in our ownership. I know the HSE were willing to offload St Brigid’s to the Council but it seems to be a very drawn out process,” he added.
