Council to start work on wobbly pedestrian cobbles

Remedial works on the city’s worst affected pedestrianised street will take place before an extensive regeneration scheme begins in 2019.

Chief Executive of Galway City Council, Brendan McGrath, acknowledged that Shop Street, in its current condition, required “repairs and remediation, which we can’t leave until 2019”.

“It is intended that we will carry out works on the worst parts where it has sagged, and where there is ponding of water,” he told members at this week’s local authority meeting at City Hall.

“We are working with Irish Water to remediate the sewer beneath Shop Street. That is a very expensive piece of work in its own right.”

He further told councillors that this was part of an overall regeneration project for Galway.

“There are a number of key pieces within this critical path – in January 2018, a report will be brought to Council for consideration. That will involve the enhancement of cycling, the expansion of pedestrian areas, and the regeneration of the entire city centre.”
