Council serves eviction notice on Galway Dog Club

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Dog owners in Galway have been left ‘shocked and angry’ after it emerged this week that a long-established dog training club will be evicted from its location in Liosbán Industrial Estate.

Galway City Council has initiated legal action to evict the Galway Dog Club from the local authority-owned site where it has operated for the past 11 years, casting doubt over the club’s future.

The site occupied by the club is part of a land parcel that is earmarked for the biggest ever urban regeneration project in the city – a potential half-billion-euro development of the 20-acre Sandy Road area.

“There is an onus of responsibility on the City Council to enhance and improve training facilities for dog owners – not close them down,” said Galway-based senator, Ollie Crowe.

“The Galway Dog Club is run by local people who have full-time jobs outside of the club, and families too. They are giving up their time for free and providing an invaluable service,” he added.

The Fianna Fáil senator has implored Council officials to help the club to secure another suitable venue to maintain a continuity of service for responsible dog owners from the city and further afield.

Mike O’Brien founded the club in 2000. Since moving to the grounds in Liosbán, the club has developed into one of the most innovative canine training centres in the country.

A Council spokesperson declined to comment.
