Council to seek €10k per roundabout under sponsorship scheme

For a minimum of €10,000 per annum, businesses in Galway will soon be able to sponsor the upkeep of roundabouts in the city.

The City Council has invited expressions of interest from private organisations and companies for maintenance of twelve roundabouts around the city.

It is part of an initiative by the cash-strapped Council to deal with overgrown roundabouts.

The local authority is hoping for larger organisations to provide “larger sums”, but has set the minimum contribution at €10,000.

In exchange, they will be allowed erect a small sign on the roundabout with their name and logo indicating they contributed to the upkeep of it.

The roundabouts included in the scheme are the Martin (at Galway Clinic); Skerritt (at GMIT); Joyce (Cemetery Cross); Kirwan (at Menlo Park Hotel); Browne (behind UHG); Deane (Bishop O’Donnell Road); Athy (at Clybaun Hotel); Blake (Ballymoneen Road); D’Arcy (at Seapoint); and three unnamed roundabouts on the Western Distributor Road at Bóthar Stiofáin, B&Q and the Cappagh Road.

“In order to ensure that the city and its approaches are presented and maintained to the highest possible standards, and having regard to financial pressures on Council budgets, the Council wish to determine if private organisations/companies would be willing to enter into a partnership arrangement by way of a financial sponsorship scheme to assist in the delivery of an enhanced landscaping and maintenance scheme for individual roundabouts,” the Council said.
