Council restarts engagement with landowners on Connemara Greenway

Galway County Council has recommenced the process of talking to all landowners impacted by the proposed Connemara Greenway project.

20 landowners have been revisited so far with the intention of visiting all over the coming months.

An Bord Pleanala gave the project the go-ahead in March subject to nine conditions following an oral hearing.

A presentation on the planned 52 kilometre stretch from Clifden to Oughterard was made at the last meeting of the local authority where members heard that certain landowners were still not satisfied with the plans.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, Senior Engineer Liam Gavin says the objective is to get permissive access agreement with all landowners working with them and through the communities in the area.

Should such permissive access agreements proceed, the local authority hopes to start construction on the greenway from Clifden to Derrylea as a first phase.

Funding of 9.2 million euro will be required and an application has gone to Failte Ireland.

It’s hoped a response will be received within the next four to five months.
