Claims that a new roundabout at the bottom of Mainguard Street is totally unsuitable for trucks who need to access the city centre every day have been discounted by Galway City Council.

Instead, the City Council claims the new road markings which came into effect yesterday will bring “greater certainty” to road users travelling between Mill Street, Dominick Street, and Cross Street every day.

A spokesman said that the roadworks in the Bridge Street area were now “substantially finished”, but for the relocation of parking spaces for motorcycles and the disabled at a new site on nearby Lombard Street.

“There are some small works to be done to footpaths in the area and some disabled and motorcycle parking spaces need to be relocated,” he said. “Otherwise, these works have substantially finished at this stage.”

The spokesman denied claims that motorists were “up in arms” with the new road markings and said that no complaints had been received at City Hall.
