Date Published: 21-Oct-2008

Almost all the travellers who were camped illegally in Knocknacarra for the past few weeks have moved to a new site this afternoon. [21/10]

Galway City Council and Galway Traveller Movement arranged for the convoy of almost 12 caravans to move to the site of the market on the Headford Road.

It’s understood it would be a temporary arrangement for a few months until the Council can fulfill its commitment to the Traveller Accommodation Plan.

The travellers had been camped at Millars Lane Soccer Grounds for the past fortnight, and had previously been camped at the side of the road in Moycullen for a few months

However, one of the traveller families is refusing to leave, stating that the site on the Curragh Line is a health hazard.

John Paul Delaney claims there is no proper hygiene facilities or electricity supply there and is refusing to leave the Millars Lane private grounds.
