Council disputes candidate’s claims over Loughrea water
Date Published: 28-May-2009
GALWAY County Council has flatly denied claims of contamination to Loughrea’s water supply, made by a local election candidate on foot of a survey he himself had carried out.
Labour hopeful PJ McDonnell claimed that the town’s drinking water supply was being polluted by human waste, but a spokeswoman for Galway County Council said that Loughrea’s Public Water Supply was monitored regularly by the HSE and is compliant with the drinking water standards on an ongoing basis.
The test ordered by Mr McDonnell was carried out by private lab, Hensey Glan Uisce Teo in Furbo on behalf of the Loughrea branch of the Labour Party.
It showed that the E coli level was 1,029,000 cfu/100 ml – the recommended amount for drinking water is zero.
