Council considers return of one-way traffic system

Recommendations will be presented to city councillors in the Autumn on whether to re-introduce one-way traffic systems at Lough Atalia Road and College Road.

Chief Executive of Galway City Council, Brendan McGrath, said that all traffic data collected during the roadworks under the railway bridge is being collated.

This includes traffic flows during and after the one-way system on Lough Atalia and College Road.

Mr McGrath said a report will come before councillors in the Autumn on the entirety of the project – including the data collected – and officials will have recommendations to put forward at that point.

He said the ban on right-hand turns at the Moneenageisha junction (from the Dublin Road onto the Wellpark Road and from Moneenageisha Road onto College Road) will remain in place for the time being.

“Ultimately, we can’t leave the ban in place without a decision being made in the Chamber – that will be addressed in September,” said Mr McGrath.

Local residents previously claimed that the traffic audit would be skewed because it did not take into account changes in motorists’ routes during the works, and that there would be no comparison to busier times of year.

However, a spokesperson for the Council pointed out that the figures would be compared to annual city traffic audits which are carried out every November.
