Council concerns over big screen plan for Eyre Square

The City Council may have to kick to touch an application for the erection of a big screen in the green area of Eyre Square near the Meyrick Hotel on Saturday week next when Connacht take on Glasgow Warriors in the Pro12 semi-final.

An application for the erection of a big screen from a group called East Village – representing some local hotels and pubs – has come before the City Council, just as a reseeding job has been completed on part of Kennedy Park.

City Council Chief Executive, Brendan McGrath, outlined to councillors on Monday the dilemma being faced as regards maintaining Eyre Square in good shape and allowing it to be used for public events.

“This is the contradiction I face. I do want Eyre Square to look its best but then there is demand for it to be used for public events.

“It’s a decision we have to take as to whether we allow the Square to be used for public events. But a consequence then if we do, is that we don’t have it looking as well as it should,” said Brendan McGrath.

A spokesman for the City Council told the Galway City Tribune that an area in the centre of Kennedy Park had been reseeded and fenced off, while they were also trying to protect a grass area in the southern part of the park.
