Council blamed for ‘sex snub’
A member of Galway City Council has accused the local authority of “sex discrimination” for failing to honour the county’s senior and intermediate camogie teams who won an All-Ireland title ‘double’ at Croke Park last September.
Cllr Nuala Nolan (Labour) said she could not believe that a civic reception for “these courageous and brave women” had yet to be held given that a notice of motion was passed by the council back in early October.
She contrasted the lack of action by the local authority with last year’s decision to honour the Galway hurlers just weeks after they had lost the All-Ireland final replay to Kilkenny.
“Why is it different for the women’s teams than for the men’s teams? I know that the hurlers get a bigger following, but if it was the men’s teams who won the double there would be no question of giving them a civic reception,” she said.
Cllr Nolan expressed regret that 2013 had come to an end without the teams getting the recognition they deserved from the local authority.
“What is the delay with holding this civic reception by Galway City Council?” she asked.
“The good is nearly gone out of it now, over three months after the finals. They seem to have been thrown to the side, as though their achievement doesn’t matter.”
