Council awaits report on Monivea Road speed limit

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Motorists will have to wait until November to see a change to the controversial 60km/h speed limit on the Monivea Road.

At this week’s meeting of Galway County Council, councillors were told that the new body for national default speed limits is to deliver a report to the council by November.

Back in 2007, the local area councillors in Oranmore came together to decide on a review of local speed limits.

They subsequently submitted a proposal for national, country and regional roads in the area.

In July of last year, the Oranmore councillors agreed what the speed limits would be for electoral area- and the Gardaí and the NRA were notified.

The current speed limit on the Monivea road from Galway Airport to Ballintemple is 60km/h, while smaller tertiary roads in the area carry an 80km/h limit.

Councillor Cuddy says the current system does not make sense.
