THREE new footbridges over the Corrib as well as upgrades to facilitate pedestrian, cycle and bus travel to the Parkmore Industrial Estate, are to be funded this year under the National Transport Authority’s (NTA) Active Travel grants.

The city has been allocated a total 2022 grant allocation of €15.855 million for 35 projects with amounts to be spent varying from the smallest, €10,000 – to the biggest – €2.25 million, for the Martin Junction (Galway Clinic) upgrade.

The next biggest allocation of funding is for the new pedestrian/cycle bridge downstream from the Salmon Weir structure with €1.8 million earmarked for this project which is due to be contracted out over the coming months.

By year end, motorists using the Tuam Road will be facing into another set of lights with the N83/Parkmore junction to be signalised, incorporating pedestrian crossings, better bus-stop facilities and a lower speed limit.

A budget of €1 million has also been allocated for the renewal of the old walkway at Millars Lane, Knocknacarra, while €800,000 has been granted for the advancement of the Cross City Bus Link project.

Major chunks of funding have also been confirmed for improving pedestrian, cycle and bus services to the Parkmore Road which provides access to one of the city’s busiest industrial hubs.

Minister of State at the Dept. of Transport and West Galway FG TD, Hildegarde Naughton, said that a total of €450,000, would now be invested in improved pedestrian, cycle and public transport at the Monivea Road/Parkmore Road junction and accessing the Parkmore Business Park.

She confirmed that the Doughiska-Monivea Road junction would now be signalised with improved bus priority on both of those routes with an upgrading of the pedestrian/cycle tunnel, in total costing €200,000.
