Coronas to perform new songs at Big Top
Making a return to the Big Top, The Coronas play the Galway International Arts Festival on Saturday, July 18. The quartet played the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, last month, a venue that also saw shows from Elbow, Biffy Clyro and Jack White, and they sold as many tickets as these arena fillers.
But The Coronas are not content to rest on their laurels at home, and are now based in London. Lead singer Danny O’Reilly explains the reason for the move.
“It’s the same as any industry, you have to go and put yourself in the shop window,” he says. “We were getting a little bit in our comfort zone in Ireland; I suppose it was a big fish/small pond kind of thing.
As soon as came over here, we realised we were at the bottom of a much bigger ladder. We realigned where we wanted to go. As soon as we went over the songs, we felt, improved.
“We’re better, as a result of changing our ambitions and surroundings,” he adds.
The Coronas have been recording their new album in London with producer Elliot James, who has previously worked with Two Door Cinema Club and Kaiser Chiefs.
“We liked the way he saw us and where he thought the music was going,” Danny says. “Straight away, we clicked with him. A lot of the time producers can be like an arranged marriage – you’re committing a lot to someone you don’t really know!”
