Corofin ready to throw down the gauntlet to title holders Moycullen

Moycullen captain Dessie Conneely lifts the Frank Fox Cup after their historic senior football championship triumph at Pearse Stadium last October.

YOU’D nearly forget that Moycullen are the reigning Galway senior football champions.

Apart from it being nearly a year since they captured the Frank Fox Cup for the first time, we had become so accustomed to the Corofin juggernaut just powering over all in front of them year after year.

Not since 2012 have Kevin O’Brien’s charges started the campaign as challengers rather than champions, but it’s the road they have to travel over the coming weeks.

Of the rest, Tuam Stars and Mountbellew-Moylough look the best equipped to launch a major bid for honours, while perhaps under-achieving Salthill/Knocknacarra can also enjoy a sustained run.

The 2021 senior football championship belatedly kicks off this weekend with nine opening round group ties.
