Corinthians capture U-16 Division One League title
Corinthians 12
Buccaneers 10

A wonderful display of rugby in very tough conditions secured Corinthians the U-16 Division One League title on Sunday afternoon when they overcame a tough Buccaneers side in the final played in Buccaneers’ home ground of Dubarry Park.
Given the table situation at the end of the league section of games, it would have been a brave person to predict this outcome considering that Corinthians were the fourth of four at the top of the table on scoring difference.
With Ballina out in front at the top of the table, Corinthians, Galwegians and Buccaneers were all tied on 16 points. Corinthians defeated Galwegians 12-7 in their semi-final but the game between Ballina and Buccaneers was not played despite the best efforts of the Connacht Branch to get the game fixed on a date that was suitable to both teams.
However, Ballina’s refusal to play following two postponements left the branch with no choice but to call off the game and award it to Buccaneers, which led to the situation of Corinthians facing Buccaneers in the decider.
What transpired was a classic game of rugby and Buccaneers were close to opening the scoring in the 14th minute when their captain, Callum Kelly, was denied by some outstanding Corinthian defending. Three minutes later the line was breached when Charlie O’Carroll blocked down an attempted Corinthians clearance, and Conor Dowling got in for the try that was not converted.
Corinthians had to respond, and they did five minutes later when Donagh Kilcommins used his guile to get inside the Buccs cover and touchdown, with Sean Walsh making the conversion to give Corinthians a 7-5 lead.
