ConTempo lunchtime series makes a return

The Galway Music Residencyhas announce its 2016/17 series of Lunchtimes with ConTempo series, which will be held in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church in Galway City.

This popular series begins on Tuesday next, September 6, at 1.10pm and will focus on the late string quartets of Joseph Haydn (Opus 76 and 77) throughout the nine performances, which runs until June 2017.

The Galway ConTempo Quartet will perform String Quartet Op. 76, No. 1 next Tuesday, the first work in Haydn’s last complete set of string quartets, which the composer dedicated to the Hungarian count, Joseph Georg von Erdődy.

Supported by The Arts Council, NUI Galway and Galway City and County Councils, admission to this event is free, open to all and early arrival is recommended.

Lunchtimes with ConTempo will take place on the first Tuesday of each month – September 6, October 4, November 1, December 6, February 7, and March 7 will focus on Opus 76; while  April 4, May 2, and June 6 will focus on Opus 77.

The ConTempo Quartet was formed in 1995 in Bucharest, and spent 13 years in music in the west opf Ireland, being appointed the Galway Quarter in Residence in 2003. In 2014 ConTempo was also appointed RTÉ’s Quartet in Residence.

The Galway Music Residency (TGMR) was established in 2002 to cultivate a comprehensive music development programme for Galway, with a professional ensemble at its centre. The programme was designed to bring performances to new audiences in Galway City and County and to broaden the experience of those already involved in music.

TGMR also runs a vibrant programme of community and educational projects, engaging with young musicians and listeners of all ages.
