Music from Bulgaria will feature in ConTempo’s November lunchtime concert, which will take place next Tuesday, November 5, at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, starting at 1.10pm. ConTempo will perform Goleminov’s String Quartet No 3 and Tabakova’s On a Bench in the Shade for the concert. It’s part of the From Europe with Love series, now in its second year.

This series explores the string quartet repertoire from each of the 27 EU countries, with speakers from the featured nations introducing each concert, and sharing their responses to the chosen music.

This month’s guest speaker is the Ambassador of Bulgaria to Ireland, Gergana Karadjova.  She has been recently appointed to Ireland, and as part of her welcome, the Bulgarian Embassy will host a wine reception at Tuesday’s concert.

Marin Goleminov was one of Bulgaria’s most important composers. He studied in Paris and taught at the Conservatory in Sofia. He died in Portugal in 2002.

This quartet, Old Bulgarian, was written during World War II and is one of his most dramatic works.  The influence of the country’s folk music can be heard in its rhythms.
