Consultation begins at Tuam company in wake of job cuts
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Constultation is due to get underway between management and staff at Transitions Optical in Tuam in the wake of job cuts at the company.
The contact lense manufacturer, which is based on the Dunmore Road, is set to lose up to 60 of its total staff of 170.
Workers were told at a meeting today that manufacturing volumes need to be reduced, and this could lead to up to 60 redundancies at the facility.
A 30-day consultation will now take place between management and staff in a bid to limit the number of jobs losses.
However, the company is hopeful that no more than 60 jobs will be cut.
In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, Plant Director Kevin Minton said manufacturing volume will be moved to Asia to look after clients there.
The remaining manufacturing for European customers will remain in Tuam.
It’s expected that the redundancies will be completed by the end of the year and the company has promised a generous severance package.
