Construction work to begin on Knocknacarra secondary school
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Construction work is to begin this month in Knocknacarra on the new school for Coláiste na Coiribe
The Galway contractor, Stewarts, has been selected to construct the new school, football pitch and 380m of access road at Ballymoneen Road
The construction budget is in excess of €10m and a total investment of €16m will be made by Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board in this new facility
Approximately 100 construction workers will be employed during the construction phase
The new base for the all Irish second level school will be completed by August next year and will provide sixty permanent teaching and support staff positions
Coláiste na Coiribe currently accommodates 450 pupils and has operated from dispersed temporary accommodation on the Tuam road in Bohermore since 1992.
The new facility in Knocknacarra will see the college become Ireland’s largest Gaelcholáiste, with 720 attending and an annual 1st year intake of 120 pupils from 2015.
The state of the art facilities will comprise a full size sports hall, five science labs, two Woodwork and two art rooms; additional practical rooms for Metalwork, Technology, Music and a Language Laboratory.
There are 1600 applications on file for 1st year places for 2015 – 2023 and the Design Team have incorporated potential expansion of 30% for the building.
