ATHENRY appear to have stolen a march on their rivals in the race for the Premier Division title. Two clean sheets hugely aided their unbeaten run as they made it five wins on the trot following successes over Salthill Devon and St Bernard’s in recent action.

In the First Division, it appears that no one wants to take on Tuam Celtic in the chase for the title, as they were the only winners from the top five and appear to now have a clear path to the title. Colemanstown United and Merlin Woods/Medtronic both lost, while West Coast United and Cois Fharraige were held to disappointing draws.

Having annexed the Second Division title the previous week following their win over Craughwell United, all that was left for Colga was a home game against NUI Galway and no matter what the outcome, collect the winners trophy afterwards. However, the students did not even give them the honour of turning up for their scheduled meeting on Saturday, but conceded the game in advance and so rained on Colga’s parade. The home side did tog out for the trophy presentation and photo afterwards, but there was little satisfaction in that.

Athenry 1

Salthill Devon 0

A classy opening half finish by Cole Connolly and two superb reflex saves by home goalkeeper TJ Forde were the highlights as Athenry maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier Division season with a merited win over a committed City side at Moanbawn in mid-week.

The contest was uncompromising and if the visitors were up for the game, then the home side had even an extra bit more to offer. Both sides probably traded in parity in the opening half, with chances created and missed at both ends. However, the resumption saw Athenry take control and despite the narrow margin, their goal was seldom under threat as they dictated matters for the half.
