A Connemara woman who stabbed her ex-boyfriend to death has been handed down a ten year sentence, with the final three suspended, for manslaughter.

Maura Thornton from Inverin in Connemara stabbed Kevin Joyce 18 times when he appeared uninvited outside her apartment in Salthill two years ago.

The victim’s family previously told the Central Criminal Court that they hoped his 31 year-old killer would be given the opportunity to heal.

She had been cleared by a jury in January of the murder of Kevin Joyce, but was found guilty of his manslaughter at an apartment she rented in Upper Salthill on Sunday, July 31st 2011.

Today she was given a 10 year sentence with three years suspended.
