Connemara seaweed harvesters to benefit from higher rates
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Seaweed harvesters along the Connemara coast are to benefit from an increase in the price of seaweed.
The decision has been announced by Arramara Teo, which was recently bought out by Canadian company, Acadian Seaplants.
Arramara Teoranta presently pays €35 per tonne to seaweed harvesters – that will now be raised to €38.
The company takes in a about 25,000 tonnes per year.
Arramara Teo was recently bought out by the Canadian group, Acadian Seaplants of Nova Scotia.
The business has been in operation for almost 70 years and it is a key part of the local economy in west Connemara coastal areas.
