A pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in the Connemara Gaeltacht is to more than double its workforce following the announcement yesterday of 220 new jobs.

Bioniche Pharma, an Údarás na Gaeltachta supported company located in Inverin, will be expanding as part of its American parent company’s decision to strengthen its manufacturing and R&D facilities in Dublin and Galway.

Mylan, the largest generics pharmaceutical manufacturers in Ireland, already employs 700 people between their two locations in Baldoyle, Co Dublin and in Inverin in Cois Fharraige, where there are currently 160 people employed.

In 2009, the company in Inverin opened an R&D facility and committed to hiring up to 25 workers in the following three years. This was carried out and yesterday’s announcement by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, copperfastens its continued commitment in Ireland.

The total number of jobs announced yesterday is 490 – 220 of them destined for the Inverin plant where a state-of-the-art R&D facility was developed with the support of Udarás on its Inverin industrial estate. Recruitment has already started in Galway where applicants are required to be pharmacuetical graduates or highly skilled for the specialist manufacturing jobs.

The expansion of Mylan’s operations in Ireland, involves R&D and manufacturing capabilities within the company’s respiratory, injectables and oral solids franchises.
