Connemara may require new administrative local government capital
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Connemara may need a new administrative capital if proposed changes to the workings of the County Council go ahead after next year’s election.
Clifden has traditionally been described as the capital but one Councillor has now suggested that an Cheathrua Rua is the more appropriate location for the County Councils headquarters for the whole of Connemara.
There will be nine County Councillors in the Conamara Electoral Area after next year’s election.
If proposed changes go ahead they will have more responsibility and regular meetings locally. And they may need a head office.
Councillor Seán Ó Tuairisg, who is based in Indreabhán, has said that an Cheathrua Rua is the appropriate place for the Council head office given the significance of the Gaeltacht in Connemara. That would make it the administrative capital.
But Councillor Eileen Mannion in Clifden says it should be a central location if a Council head office venue is being chosen in Connemara. But she did not specify a venue.
Councillor Seosamh Ó Cuaig said he agreed with the central location proposal and he suggested that somewhere in the Carna parish area would be an ideal bridge between north and south Connemara.
