Rural homeowners across Ireland need to join a national protest against septic tank charges according to the leader of Connemara’s opposition campaign.

Páraic Ó Conghaola says that many people in other counties don’t understand what the new legislation regarding septic tanks will actually mean for them.

He says they’re not opposed to a once-off registration charge of 50 or 100 euro, but are against paying for necessary upgrade works to tanks.

The Connemara group plans to garner support in other counties over the coming weeks for a national protest in Dublin.

Last month, hundreds of protestors gathered at a meeting of Galway County Council to voice their opposition to the legislation proposed by Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan.
