Connemara Gaeltacht has highest level of primary school leavers

The south west of the Connemara Gaeltacht has the unenviable claim to fame of boasting the highest proportion of people in County Galway who did not go beyond primary school level.

A study compiled by Pobal in conjunction with consultants Krugge/Hasse shows that the proportion of the population that did not continue on past basic education is running at over 40 per cent in these areas.

The Gorumna District Electoral area in Lettermore/Lettermullen has the highest percentage of adults in County Galway who did not go beyond primary school – 45.3 per cent.

The Ros Muc area has a figure of 44 per cent that did not go beyond primary education and parts of Carna and Cill Chiaráin – the Owengowla DED – are at 42 per cent.

The only other place in the County that topped the 40 per cent mark was Cloonkeen Electoral District in south Galway.

The average figure in the County…outside of the City area… for people who did not go beyond Primary School is just under 18 per cent.  The Pobal report shows a large section of southwest Connemara to be well over double that figure.
