Connemara farmers join hundreds from West at commonages meeting
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Almost two thousand farmers from Galway, Mayo and Sligo attended a meeting last night to discuss the future of hill commonages.
They believe that the newly introduced GLAS scheme is not workable in relation to commonage land.
It requires agreement between half of the farmers on a commonage about how its managed, before payment can be drawn down.
Yesterday a Galway livestock farmer, Joe Healy, was appointed as Chairperson of the new Commonage Implementation Committee.
Sinn Féin city councillor, Mairéad Farrell attended last night’s meeting in Westport and says there was unanimous agreement against the GLAS scheme.
