Galway Bay fm newsroom – A preliminary account of the damage caused by the recent storms and high tides in Connemara and the Aran Islands will emerge at a meeting of the Connemara Councillors later this morning.

This meeting, which will also be attended by council engineers and officials, is being convened in order to look at ways of repairing the damage that has been caused.

Cemetery walls broken, graves flooded, parked cars swept out to sea, flooded houses, piers damaged, fences gone, seaside roads torn up and beaches swept bare of sand – these damages occurred in Connemara when a huge tide swept in from the Atlantic on the morning of January the 3rd. The damage was worsened in some places by another big surge a week ago today.

Some people remain cut off from main roads and efforts continue to get a way in to some cemeteries.

Engineers, County Councillors and community organisations have been putting the picture together: it’s now time to count the cost.

A general estimate may emerge at today’s Connemara Councillors meeting. Its likely to be scores of millions; it’s a lengthy coastline all along Connemara, the Aran Islands and Inishbofin.

Beyond the emergency measures Councillors will be looking to Dublin and Europe for further funds.
