THE story of the Connacht Tribune’s century is one of the highlights on a packed TG4 schedule, which serves up plenty of festive treats to appeal to every taste.

Cead Bliain den Churadh Connachtach is a documentary made by Inishbofin native Kieran Concannon, reflecting on one hundred years of the Tribune newspaper. It recalls some momentous and some forgotten stories from the storehouse of history that is the archive of a provincial paper.

The programme explores how the great events of a century were reported locally, while reclaiming some stories that have faded from our collective memory and reflecting on the sweeping changes that have occurred in that period.

The programme has a broadly chronological structure. Contributors Tom Kenny, Peadar O’Dowd and Mairtin Davy O Coisdealbha, as well as lifelong readers from around the county, add context and colour to sketches of individual stories.

Further input comes from former and current staff members, Sean Duignan, Bernie NÍ Fhlatharta and current editor and broadcaster Dave O’Connell. That can be seen on December 27 at 9.30pm.

Other documentaries includes one on Johnny Cash, the tragic story of three Kerry fishermen who perished 50 years ago and the story of the Devil appearing at a dance hall in Mayo in 1958.
