ON a cold and dry night in Newport, Connacht were far from flawless but produced flashes of brilliance in a bonus point victory over the Dragons at Rodney Parade.

Muddy underfoot conditions made for an error strewn contest, yet Andy Friend’s side still managed the maximum return to extend their advantage over third place Scarlets in the standings and maintain their push to secure Champions Cup rugby for next season.

Just quite what it is about the away trips this season is hard to fathom, but Connacht are in their element when they hop on a bus and leave Galway these days. They’ve lost five of their last six at the Sportsground but they can’t stop winning on their travels. Even their European Champions Cup defeat away to competition powerhouse Racing 92, proved to be a high point in terms of performance levels.

Perhaps it’s all related to the new travel arrangements – chartered flights to and from games with no overnight hotel stay – which seems to be a hit with players. They left Galway for Friday’s game at noon for a flight from Shannon, and after the game, they were back on a bus and straight to the airport. By the time they returned to Galway it was around 2:30am. Players seem happier with that. That may well be something Connacht look to keep in place for trips to Wales post restrictions.
