Connacht determined to back up win over Leinster by also claiming Munster’s scalp

Connacht centre Tom Daly carrying the battle to Munster in last season's inter-pro at the Sportsground. The top two teams in Conference B clash again in Galway on Saturday evening.

NEXT for Connacht are Munster at the Sportsground on Saturday (7:35) in a battle of the top two in Conference B of the PRO14. The visitors will look to bounce back from a loss to Ulster at the weekend and are expected to be close to full strength. The hosts will be looking to build on their thrilling success at the RDS and hoping to close the gap at the top of the standings.
As It stands, the every changing tournament seems set to finish with a simple final between the two conference winners. So this fixture could well be the difference between an exciting spring or a procession for a Munster side that have won seven of eight games so far and sit eight points clear of Connacht at the top of the standings.
This does have a ‘must win’ feel to it then, if Connacht are to remain in contention for an unlikely first placed finish that is. Aside from that however and speaking in a more realistic tone, the points on offer could be critical in the push for a top three finish which will see Andy Friend’s side maintain their Champions Cup status. Sides like Scarlets, Cardiff and Edinburgh will push hard but Connacht are well clear for the moment.
This week’s pre match talk focused quite a lot on the previous outing. Understandably, days on from the hair-raising win at the RDS, all the talk was of Connacht’s thrilling display at the home of the current champions and a Leinster side that had won all of their previous nine games comfortably.
“I had three messages to them before the game, be decisive, trust our systems and trust the game plan. They delivered in all those areas and that was really pleasing.” said Friend on Tuesday.
