Concerns raised over stroke admissions at Portiuncula

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Concerns have been raised over the availability of emergency treatment for stroke patients at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.

Roscommon Cllr and health forum member Cllr. Laurence Fallon raised the issue at a meeting of the regional forum this week.

Members were advised that although there is a dedicated stroke care unit and a stroke clinical nurse specialist, the HSE is currently awaiting replacement of a permanent consultant geriatrician.

This position was approved in June and is to be advertised by the national recruitment service.

There is currently a locum consultant physician in place.

Cllr Fallon says this means transferring stroke patients to Galway which he fears could create knock-on problems.
