Concerns over City Council grants as Theatre57 launches directory to assist members
The artist collective Theatre57, which represents more than 100 members in Galway, will launch its pilot Member Directory next Wednesday, July 8.
This will feature profiles of 37 of its members, with a detailed description of each person’s work, an image and a link to further information.
The directory will grow once more funding is available. But funding is a real concern to Theatre57 members as Galway City Council has not yet announced details of its 2020 arts grants – something that’s well overdue.
“Artists and organisations submitted applications in January and the six-month wait for funding is hugely detrimental to their ability to work and live,” says Theatre57 member Emma O’Grady.
“Given Galway’s status as European Capital of Culture, it’s particularly disappointing that there is no priority given to local artists whatsoever,” she adds.
Theatre57 was founded two years ago and has grown from its initial 57 members to more than 100 now. Its aims include the establishment of a creative hub in the city where independent artists can be supported in the creation and delivery of their work.
The new Member Directory is a vital service, especially as the arts are struggling so badly at present, according to Sarah O’Toole of the group, who designed the directory.
