Concern over impact of coastal erosion in Renvyle
Owners of the well known Renvyle House Hotel say coastal erosion is gathering pace in the land that separates a nearby lake, where it sources its water, and the sea.
This land strip and the lake is designated as a Special Area of Conservation due to a rare plant.
Renvyle House Hotel employs 65 staff and is one of the main employers in the area.
Owner John Coyle says rock armour is not sufficient and in five years time, coastal erosion may pose a serious threat as the sea may breach the land making the lake open to salt water.
Galway West Senator Trevor O’Clochartaigh says he has contacted the local authority and the Department of the Environment to find out what supports are available to protect such SACs.
