Galway Bay fm newsroom – Concerns have been raised over illegal parking on footpaths and disabled spaces in  city centre areas.

The matter was debated at this week’s meeting of the Joint Policing Committee where Tommy Flaherty of Galway City Community Forum said cars were parking on footpaths in areas such as Market Street.

Senator Trevor O’Clochartaigh said he has also received numerous representations from disability groups in relation to the local authority’s zero tolerance approach to illegal parking.

City Manager Brendan McGrath told the meeting there is a finite number of wardens in the city but specific problem areas will be reviewed.

Garda Chief Superintendent Tom Curley said a system is in place which sees patrol cars scan the number plates of cars, after which penalties are issued in the post.
